Multiboot Microsoft Windows, OpenBSD and Slackware Linux

I got a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 and I’m not really happy with how the fan is managed by OpenBSD. Plus, the ThinkPad A485 running Windows for $WORK has been freezing quite a few times recently. So I decided I could try using a single ThinkPad for both $WORK and $HOME using different Operating Systems. I recently loved Slackware Linux again and wished I could use it too on that machine. So this is how I configured a multiboot environnement on the ThinkPad with Microsoft Windows 11, OpenBSD 7.3 and Slackware Linux 15.0. Note that I will encrypt as much storage as possible using the various available OS technologies.

FreeNAS on QNAP TS-453mini

It’s been a couple of weeks since I received my QNAP TS-453mini, aimed to replace Synology DS403slim. After looking at QTS, I went to check various OSes to run it. Mostly because QTS looks too fat to me. Mainly because I want ZFS storage. Probably because I’m a BSD guy. At last, I decided to run FreeNAS on it.

French keyboard mapping using VMware Fusion

Bored with a couple of issues with my MacBook Pro, upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite via Mavericks, I decided to reinstall the whole thing. I didn’t restore system parameters from Time Machine as I believe there were blobs lying there. After installing VMware Fusion 7.1.1 from scratch, I opened my previous Windows VMs and discovered my french keyboard wasn’t mapped correctly…

Another disk for the Windows 7 user’s documents

I had to install an HP HDX18 laptop for a friend. It ships with Vista and two internal disks. The challenge was to get rid of Vista, install Windows 7 on it, keep system and programs on the first disk and user’s documents on the other disk. I found a really nice tutorial on some Win7 forum that explains how to do it. This will just sums up the directions to achieve it but one really should read the whole document.
